When you think of the word “CLING” what comes to mind?
I remember when my children were growing up and we would plaster the windows with seasonal window clings. During every holiday we would decorate the door and the big bay window with cute Christmas, Easter, Fall and Spring clings. These clings were amazing, just peel and stick… and stick they did; they didn’t come off until you peeled them away.
That’s how we need to CLING to Jesus. We stick to him, keep him close, and let nothing peel us away from him! To grow in his word and to hide it in our hearts!
Dabaq is the Hebrew word for CLING — it means to cleave, keep close, stick, stay close, keep close, stick to, stick with, follow closely, join to, CLING!
Serve only the LORD your God and fear him alone. Obey his commands, listen to his voice, and cling to him. Deuteronomy 13:4 (NLT)
Serve the Lord Only – Fear Him alone – Obey his commands – Listen to his voice – Cling to him!
Those are the commands in Deuteronomy 13:4. We will break them down in a moment but before we do, stop and think about them. Will you choose this for your life? What holds you back from choosing these things?
*SERVE THE LORD ONLY
1 Samuel 12:24 (ESV) Only fear the Lord and serve him faithfully with all your heart. For consider what great things he has done for you.
Serving the Lord faithfully is trusting and obeying him and him only. Sometimes we try to serve the Lord with our other foot in the world but that is always disastrous! We need to firmly plant both feet with the Lord. Jesus reminded us in Luke 4:8– Jesus replied, “The Scriptures say, ‘You must worship the LORD your God and serve only him.'”
“As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord” Joshua 24:15
*FEAR HIM ALONE
We don’t like that word FEAR. Sometimes we want to use it in a negative way, but here it’s not to be used negativity. That word fear just means a reverence. We are to reverence the Lord, honor him and understand how much God hates sin in the life of a believer, his child. This fear is healthy, worshipping the Lord, respecting, obeying and submitting to him in all things.
Deuteronomy 5:29 Oh, that their hearts would be inclined to fear me and keep all my commands always, so that it might go well with them and their children forever
*OBEY HIS COMMANDS
His commands are not burdensome…
In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome 1 John 5:3
Sometimes we have a hard time with that word “Obey” — we would rather do things our own way. We actually show our love towards God when we obey his commands. In the above verse it says that his commands are not burdensome.
If you love me, you will keep my commandments. John 14:15
*LISTEN TO HIS VOICE
His sheep hear his voice!
John 10:3-5 The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep recognize his voice and come to him. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. After he has gathered his own flock, he walks ahead of them, and they follow him because they know his voice. They won’t follow a stranger; they will run from him because they don’t know his voice.”
God is always speaking to us. Our part is to open our ears and our heart to receive his instructions. To be attentive to his voice. He speaks differently to everyone but if you are his child then he is speaking. Take some time to listen. Slow down to hear.
*CLING TO HIM
Hold fast to him – stick to him! Cleave to Him, keep close to Him, join to Him!
I cling to you;
your strong right hand holds me securely. Psalm 63:8
Our souls only need to cling to Jesus. It’s the best choice. When we stick close to him our lives will be changed. He is always there for us. We are the ones who peel ourselves away.
Joshua 23:8 “But you are to cling to the LORD your God, as you have done to this day.
