FASTING 2017 – ABIDING SERIES

FASTING 2017 – ABIDING SERIES

One way we can ABIDE with the Lord is through FASTING. It’s not the most popular thing in our culture and many people veer away from it, why?

Is it fear. Is it lack of knowledge. Is it that self denial is unpopular. Why?

Joel 2:12“Even now,” declares the LORD, “return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning.

When we FAST, I believe that God notices. It’s a Spiritual discipline where we say “NO” to our own desires and “YES” to God’s desires. God desires that we empty ourselves and die to ourselves. This is not popular at all. The world tells us to have everything, to not go without, so different from God’s economy!

He must increase, but I must decrease – John 3:30

Luke 9:23 Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.

Fasting simply put is: DENYING ones FLESH and DESIRES to INCREASE our ATTENTION toward CHRIST.

Fasting is a Spiritual discipline that can bring us closer to God. We don’t FAST to get things, we FAST to get more intimate with God. Biblical fasting is refraining from food for a period of time, or certain foods for a time. It’s a denial for sure!

Denial is hard! Denying ourselves is not easy. We want things when we want them. The Holy Spirit is amazing when we get serious about fasting. He helps us through the struggles of denial. He helps us focus. He helps us stay the course.

When I fast I usually have a plan of what that will look like for that period of time. I map out how long I will fast. The type of fast I’m going to do and the reason I’m fasting. Sometimes I skip meals or do a Daniel fast. Sometimes I go a few days and only do water and juices…this is what I mean by the type of fast. I think this is very important, to have a plan because it’s easy to give up when it get’s hard. It gets hard, I won’t lie but that’s when we can pray and the Holy Spirit can minister to us.

There is so much out there today on fasting. I believe it’s VERY IMPORTANT to always go to the word of God and read up on the fasts done in the bible. I want to encourage you that if you have never fasted to start out slow and always talk to your doctor before starting. I was scared the first time I fasted. I have low blood sugar so it was a worry for me that it would drop. It never did. I believe it was because of prayer.

Begin to pray about how you can fast this coming year to increase your intimacy with God. If you have any questions feel free to message me, I would love to help. I’m not an expert but I have some resources that may help you.

I want to pray for you…

Father, I uplift my friends to You who may be considering a fast this coming year. Jesus, You know full well how hard it is. I pray that you give them courage to step out into this Spiritual discipline to get closer to you. Give them strength and power to overcome struggles as they come. Bless them Father as they honor and seek You. Help them to stay the course that they commit to. Guide them, Father. We know that it please You when we deny ourselves, please give us a passion and desire to do so. We love you Jesus!

O God, You are my God; I shall seek You earnestly; My soul thirsts for You, my flesh yearns for You, In a dry and weary land where there is no water. Psalm 63:1

Thanks for your great post Tammy! I pray every day for my sons to become disciples of Christ. How best I can fast for this prayer? I appreciate if you could share your insight and recommendations with me. Thank you.

      Hello Naz,
Happy New year! This is a great question. Over the years of fasting and learning, I would call this a “target fast” From my experience, I have prayed for my own family through prayer & fasting, targeting my prodigals to return to the Lord. One has. It wasn’t right after fasting though; it was a few years later but I believe God heard! I keep believing, praying for my other. Can it happen right after a fast, YES I believe it can! Prayer and fasting together are powerful. I don’t know if you have ever fasted before. There are many ways you can fast. Esther did a three day “target fast” in the bible. I personally start the New year on a 21 day fast. This looks different every year for me, but I incorporate a partial/Daniel fast together. I “target” specific prayers during this time. My number 1 resource for fasting is Jentezen Franklin. Here is his website: https://www.jentezenfranklin.org/fasting – He has so much information that will help you in your commitment to fast and pray for your Sons. Keep praying, keep believing, Naz! God hears your prayers! I hope this has given you some insight. If you have anymore questions please let me know. I will be praying for you and your journey into fasting for your family!

Thanks for taking me counter-cultural today. I have, in the past, been greatly blessed by seasons of fasting, but have gotten away from it. I appreciate this reminder.
